Tom's story

Wilmington, North Carolina

TOM GALE, BROKER

Every week I lend my truck to St. Joe’s Food Pantry, a local non-profit. Every week, they drive it out to the more rural parts of Wilmington and beyond to deliver food to the people who don’t have the means to get to local food banks here.

Transportation costs, rental car costs and gas can add up for a non-profit doing the kind of work St. Joe’s does. So, when my truck is available, St. Joe’s has it. As a result, the cost they save on a rental enables them to acquire more food and get it to the people in need.

I’m a second-generation Realtor. This year, I celebrated my 14th anniversary practicing real estate. Like many Realtors, I work hard putting in long hours that can extend into my private and family life. Finding balance is important, especially when what you do for work is something you really love.

What I love is helping people. I realize this might sound cliche but real estate is, by default, a service we perform for the benefit of others. Being selfless about it and using the skills you build as an agent to enhance others is where you find the greatest reward.

I have a young family — a wife and two young kids. I could teach my children about homes and transactions, how to be a good negotiator and how to overcome objections. These are important to doing a job.

But what I want them to learn and understand about this profession is what an agent can create for others as a result of a job well done, through selfless acts of kindness and consideration — a better community, a connection to people that enhances lives for everyone.

Because at the end of the day, we’re in the business of paying it forward.
